Up in the morning at the break of dawn A couple good friends and a couple good songs, on the radio Everything you need in the back of the car You’ve got the open road and a Texaco card, and you’re on your own The Gulf Coast water was warm and blue You snuck onto a boat and took a twilight cruise, it was the craziest thing you ever did You told that girl you’ve always liked One day you’re gonna make her your wife, and she turns bright red When the seasons change like they will When the falling leaves seem to echo how you feel When your whole world turns from July to November This is the day, this is the day, this is the day you will remember On a little dirt road just out of town On a ridge with a view of the sun going down And your heart beating in your chest The sparkle took her by surprise She never saw it coming you could see it in her eyes She just nodded yes When the seasons change like they will When the falling leaves seem to echo how you feel When your whole world turns from July to November This is the day, this is the day, this is the day you will remember Your wife wakes you up in the middle of the night Says it not a false alarm this time, and your scared to death You hold her hand and you say a prayer Tears well up as the moment draws near You’ll see his first breath When the seasons change like they will When the falling leaves seem to echo how you feel When your whole world turns from July to November This is the day, this is the day, this is the day you will remember

I was straight out of college, with a dream in my head A guitar in my truck, no home and no bed Traveling the road like so many before With an interstate map that quickly got worn Growing up in the West, I’d never seen Anything east of Texas, or south of DC The first time I headed down I-85 A part of me I’d never felt came alive It’s an hour from Atlanta to East Alabama It took one hour to change a man’s fate One night in the South, turned me around Changed my views and my mind and myself Like a step back in time to how things might have been When you could leave your doors unlocked all night It might be the way the stars shine or the slow pace of life Or the taste of sweet tea in my mouth But I never knew where I belonged till one night in the South So now there’s a small town that I call my home I’ve got a view of the country, sitting on my front porch A couple magnolia’s, and an acre of land And a girl that I love with a ring on her hand She changed my perspective, and she changed my life The first time I looked in her eyes

Black Coffee 04:06
Tonight she’s feeling better Tonight she’s feeling alright, at least that’s what she says I can see her smiling But I can hear her voice is just about to crack For years it seems I’ve been waiting for this moment It shames me just a little, to say I was happy when she called I know he’s probably thinking as he’s driving out of town That I would be the one to break her fall Tomorrow morning she’ll wake up And pour her coffee black And stare out of the window at the cars parked round the cul-de-sac And wage a losing battle against the voices in her head That tell her he’ll be coming back We all knew that this was coming It had been a while since things seemed right He was her knight in shining armor She was just a way for him to pass the time All the while I was playing every angle Playing the part of anyone I thought that she might need I knew that one day he would leave her stranded And I hoped that she’d come running straight to me Tomorrow morning she’ll wake up And pour her coffee black And stare out of the window at the cars parked round the cul-de-sac And wage a losing battle against the voices in her head That tell her he’ll be coming back So, it almost ended up the way I‘d dreamt it She is here beside me, and we’ll never be apart But even as she’s holding me, she’s fighting with a memory I never thought that guy would break my heart Every morning she’ll wake up And pour her coffee black And stare out of the window, looking for his Cadillac And wage a losing battle against the voices in her head That tell her he’ll be coming back

Living in this railroad town Time moves by pretty slow We plan our days not by some clock up on the wall But based on when that train whistle blows Down at the hardware store I stock the shelves Mop the floor and keep the windows clean Everyone that comes in here they all know me by name And I can take the afternoon off, pretty much anytime I need Sometimes when I lie awake in the middle of the night Listening to that train rolling by I think about what’s out beyond the edges of this town Wonder if there’s something there I’m meant to find All I’d have to do is hop on board They’re selling one-way tickets at the window on the platform I could pack my bags and I’d be gone These rails can take me anywhere, except this town where I was born My father always told me I was meant for something big You’ll escape this place one day he would say He never was an easy one to please Maybe that’s the reason why I stayed Sometimes when I lie awake in the middle of the night Listening to that train rolling by I wonder what he’d say if he could see me now He’d probably tell me I had let him down, but he’d be fighting back a smile All I’d have to do is hop on board They’re selling one-way tickets at the window on the platform I could pack my bags and I’d be gone These rails can take me anywhere, except this town where I was born When that whistle blows in the distance As the sun is going down I sit on my front porch and I think to myself I’m either missing something Or I’ve got it all figured out All I’d have to do is hop on board

I just keep on driving, two hands on the wheel These dusty 2-lanes seem to know exactly how I feel Long forgotten but more alive than a memory Somewhere along the line, they became Less important than they used to be Everything I feel tells me to turn this car around I could make it back to Jackson by the time the sun goes down I can turn these wheels around and head back home to her But I’m too far gone, to make it back to where we were I remember sunsets in the Mississippi sky Lighting fires above us and inside of her eyes It looked like heaven stretching far as we could see Somewhere along the line, they became Less majestic than they used to be Everything I feel tells me to turn this car around I could make it back to Jackson by the time the sun goes down I can turn these wheels around and head back home to her But I’m too far gone, to make it back to where we were It’s really only hours ago that I was back at home Only 150 miles or so that I have gone It’s really only everything that’s changed The fire inside her eyes was probably missing, long before today Everything I feel tells me to turn this car around I could make it back to Jackson by the time the sun goes down I can turn these wheels around and head back home to her But I’m too far gone, to make it back to where we were

Martin 04:21
Martin drove a black Camaro, and he parked it on the street So he could point it out to all the pretty girls he’d meet He could make ‘em smile and blush and weak in the knees The words he used were just as smooth as his jet black leather seats His hair was slicked back perfectly, he was Elvis Presley cool We’d all just stand and watch him walking down the halls at school He was a 18 year old celebrity, he was every girls dream He was Humphrey Bogart, John Wayne, Tom Cruise and James Dean He dated a girl named Lisa, she was a vision to be seen She had a 4.0 and she was Homecoming Queen They would cruise in that Camaro every Sunday afternoon Going 60 miles an hour down West 6th Avenue Oh, I wonder where, is he today Maybe hanging out in Hollywood with Matthew McConaughey Or maybe at the Oscars as a guest of Ashley Judd He’s the stuff of legends, everything I never was Lisa ended up at Princeton, Martin went to State At our tenth reunion, he didn’t even know her name Though she became a lawyer, and married into fame She still looked at him like the rest of us, like we still weren’t in his league Oh, I wonder where, is he today Maybe hanging out in Hollywood with Matthew McConaughey Or maybe at the Oscars as a guest of Ashley Judd He’s the stuff of legends, everything I never was Last week I saw Martin at the local Texaco Gassing up a firebird, I approached him nice and slow I could tell he didn’t know me, but he smiled and said hello He still looked just as cool as he did 15 years ago I told him who I was, and asked what he’s doing now He said he works construction on the other side of town Though it’s not what I had pictured, I’ll tell you the truth I was still in awe of him, the hero of my youth Oh, I wonder where, you are today Though I thought you'd be in Hollywood with Matthew McConaughey Or maybe on the cover of GQ magazine You're still the stuff of legends, everything I'll never be Martin turned to say goodbye, and tipped his hat just like the Duke Then he drove off in the sunset down West 6th Avenue

about

Review from Singer Magazine - Dec. 2003
"Every once in a while, I preview a CD that seems to get stuck in my CD player. By choice, mind you. I just have to lean back and soak it in. Dave Potts' latest CD 'One Night In The South' is one of those discs. Speaking directly to my heart, Potts music mixes life's crossroads with a personal spiritual journey that epitomizes the definition of a true singer/songwriter."
