Martin drove a black Camaro, and he parked it on the street

We’d all just stand and watch him walking down the halls at school
He was a 18 year old celebrity, he was every girls dream
He was Humphrey Bogart, John Wayne, Tom Cruise and James Dean

He dated a girl named Lisa, she was a vision to be seen
She had a 4.0 and she was Homecoming Queen
They would cruise in that Camaro every Sunday afternoon
Going 60 miles an hour down West 6th Avenue

Maybe hanging out in Hollywood with Matthew McConaughey

Lisa ended up at Princeton, Martin went to State
At our tenth reunion, he didn’t even know her name
Though she became a lawyer, and married into fame
She still looked at him like the rest of us, like we still weren’t in his league

Last week I saw Martin at the local Texaco
Gassing up a firebird, I approached him nice and slow

He still looked just as cool as he did 15 years ago

I told him who I was, and asked what he’s doing now
He said he works construction on the other side of town
Though it’s not what I had pictured, I’ll tell you the truth
I was still in awe of him, the hero of my youth

Martin turned to say goodbye, and tipped his hat just like the Duke
